Glossary

Canonical terms and how to use them. Purpose: lock terminology so the same concept doesn’t pick up two names across books, and give a fast reference for anyone (or any session) writing in the world. Doubles as the basis for a printable in-book appendix.

Spelling/usage conventions:

  • The Meridian, The Calloway — always capitalised “The”; italicise only if house style for ship/vessel names is adopted (currently not — keep roman).
  • the Conductor — lowercase “the”, capital “C”. Gender held ambiguous for the Meridian Conductor; never assign a pronoun beyond “they.”
  • the Passage, the Arrangement, the slow build — capital on the noun as shown; “the slow build” stays lowercase (it’s a grounder phrase, not a title).
  • chit, ticket, berth, grounder — common nouns, lowercase.

A–Z

The Arrangement (also “the office”) — The unnamed agency, older than the trains, that monitors and contains retained-memory cases (“leaks”). Operates through people on the trains; is not itself a person; persists when its operators are removed. Does not use a name and does not tolerate being named — characters who know of it avoid naming it, and that avoidance is a tell. First voiced in B2 (Calver). See reveals M2. Bandits — Raiders of the wilds and station towns. The reason trains never stop for long; a stationary train is a target. A constant background threat, especially on remote stretches and at resupply stops.

Berth — A small, semi-private compartment (curtain rather than door), better than an open bunk, worse than a First Carriage. Toll’s berth (B2); the kind of accommodation in Carriage 41 (B3). Note: the curtain-not-door rule holds for open- and middle-carriage berths, but a better, earned berth — held by someone of standing or with front-middle placement — can have an actual latching door. Casper Noll’s front-middle berth and Elliot’s earned private berth (B3) both have one; the door is a marker of status, and in Elliot’s case emotionally load-bearing (the privacy he half-regrets having).

Carriage classes — The train’s rigid stratification by position:

  • First Carriages (front): wealthy, powerful, two-storey, lifetime tickets, guards, real china.
  • Middle Carriages: working class — trades, services, administration; where most people live.
  • Open Carriages (rear): cheapest passage, shared bunks, no privacy; drifters and new arrivals. Carriage 74 is one.

Chit — The currency. Small worn metal tokens (≈ an old shilling) issued by each train’s administration. Cross-train exchange rates are negotiated at crossing points. Barter is as common as chits in the open carriages. Maintenance pay arrives as chits through cubby-holes (the worker never sees the chain that issues them — see compartmentalised labour structure).

Coldmere — The Meridian’s northernmost station town (Book Seven): grey stone at the last solid ground before the interior hardpan. Uses a seaport’s vocabulary for the emptiness it faces — the harbour (loading-yard), the quay (platform), the holds (cargo doors). Of every point on every loop, it is the nearest the rail comes to the convergence; people go missing there. Where Della Roan vanished. See the-wider-world.

Compartmentalised labour structure — The foundational mechanism by which no one knows what powers the train. Maintenance crews work non-overlapping sections; no worker has met the crew immediately forward of them; there is no overall map and no central worker. Established in What Powers the Train. See rules and side-stories/canon-notes.

The Conductor — The absolute authority of a train. Not elected; succession mechanisms vary by train and are unclear on the Meridian. Supported by enforcers, clerks, engineers. The Meridian Conductor rules through stillness and economy; Conductor Sable (the Calloway) rules through performance. The two are quietly allied (B2).

The convergence (the orbit; “arranged around it”) — Book Seven’s revelation: the loops of every train are slightly concave arcs that all orbit a single unmapped point in the northern interior — the geographic centre of the slow build (M4). ⚠️ “Orbit, not destination”: the shape (there is a centre; the network circles it) is the canon the page may state; what is at the centre, and whether the trains are falling toward it or merely held by it, is sealed (M1/M5). Prefer the words orbit / centre / hub / arranged around (Della Roan’s phrase); avoid destination / heading / bound for, which imply an arrival the series withholds. The kept blank — The northern interior on every route-chart: not redacted but never charted, an emptiness maintained — drawn, copied forward, left blank by every administration on record (Book Seven; cf. B3’s omitted, not deleted records). The administrative twin of the convergence’s unmappable centre. See reveals M4/M2.

Crossing point (the crossing, the parallel) — A stretch of parallel track where two trains run side by side, close enough to bridge with temporary gangways. Lasts only a few hours (the “four-hour clock” of B2) before the tracks diverge. A market, reunion, negotiation, and deadline at once. Recurs approximately every seven years — the interval varies (roughly six to eight) with seasons, engineering, and factors no one fully tracks, so characters speak of it loosely while “seven years” is the working canonical figure.

The crossing clock / the four-hour clock — The countdown structure of Book Two, T+0:00 to the divergence bell. Time-codes (e.g. T+1:20) mark the pressure.

Three-way crossing — A rare convergence of three loops at one place and time — gangways thrown three ways, the crossing’s market/reunion/danger squared. Exceptional, once-in-a-life (not the routine two-train crossing); lives are dated against it doubly. Opens Book Six (Calloway × Meridian × Vesper). Treat the geometry as a singular event, not recurring infrastructure.

Enforcers — The Conductor’s uniformed muscle; visible, generally polite, absolute. Distinct from Albion, who is the Conductor’s aide (no rank insignia; authority by proximity), not a rank-and-file enforcer.

FH-7 (Hatch Forward Seven) — The metal hatch between Carriages 32 and 31 marking the forward boundary of standard maintenance authorisation. Ghosted plate: FORWARD OF THIS POINT — ENGINEERING ONLY. Unlocked. Beyond it the tunnels continue, maintained by workers the standard crew has never met. Established in What Powers the Train.

The Gazette (The Meridian Gazette) — The in-universe magazine produced by the Conductor’s Office, printed every fourteen days (press in Carriage 11, office in Carriage 9), distributed front-to-rear. Editorially conservative — declines rumours rather than fabricating. Editor Dorel Strick; field correspondent D. Pell. See side-stories/canon-notes.

Grounder — A person who lives off-train, in station towns or wild settlements. Hardy, unhurried, regarded by train crews with wary respect. The grounders at Hessa’s Station keep the four-generation oral history of the slow build. They attend the track’s growth rather than ride it.

Leak (retained-memory case, memory-keeper) — A soul whose memory survived the Passage. Unprecedented as far as the general population knows; in truth a low-rate, recurring failure the Arrangement exists to contain. Known cases: Elliot, Maren Toll, Mr Plum, and (per Toll) at least a few others on the Meridian. See reveals M7. Note (B7): a leak is not the only thing the Arrangement removes — Della Roan was an ordinary arrived (no retained memory), removed for near-complete external mapping. The trigger is understanding, not the route to it. Keep “leak” reserved for retained-memory cases; do not apply it to Della. See reveals M2.

The Lender — The powerful, dangerous off-page figure who lent the gramophone to the Conductor for the B1 concert. Expects it returned in perfect condition. Identity and true nature unresolved. (Sealed options: bible-secrets.)

Loop — One complete circuit of a train’s route. The Meridian’s loop takes ≈14 months. Book Three is measured in loops (Vashti’s eleventh, then twelfth) rather than days.

The Meridian — The primary train; northern continental loop; the world of Books One and Three. Pragmatic, orderly, runs on paperwork and quiet authority.

The Calloway — The eastern-circuit train; setting of Book Two. Performative, theatrical, status displayed not concealed; carriage classes marked with coloured banners.

The Vesper — The southern-circuit train; setting of Book Six (The Eastern Circuit). The consensus answer to order: a citizen-militia commune where everyone serves and, because they serve, everyone votes. Governed by the assembly and the count; the Conductor (Quill) chairs rather than commands. Weathered grey-green and brass; boards posted the length of the train; bells that call people together, not to a schedule. The warmest governance on the network and the one most hostile to a secret. The assembly / the count (Vesper) — The governing body of The Vesper and its mechanism: decisions are debated in the assembly and settled by the count (the vote), posted on boards train-long. The franchise is service — you serve the watch, therefore you decide. A polity built on the principle that nothing is hidden from the body that decides. The slow, fair, capturable heart of the consensus train. Established Book Six.

The Chair (Vesper) — The Conductor’s role on The Vesper: to chair the assembly — convene, frame, persuade, count — not to command. Authority is borrowed from the count, vote by vote. Contrast the Meridian Conductor (stillness), Sable (performance), Verrith (the schedule), Strake (force). Established Book Six.

The Passage — The transit of a soul from the source world, through Purgatory, into Train World. Arrivals come physically intact, at their age at death, with memory wiped — except leaks. The wipe’s mechanism is presented in B1 as ambiguous (natural or imposed); B2 confirms it is imposed deliberately. See reveals M3.

Passage object — An object that “resonates” with retained-memory people: the gramophone (asks, in music only Elliot hears, why are you here?); the tuning fork (rings unstruck near Elliot; Toll carried one); a compass whose needle points wrong. Collectors prize them as “keys” to the Passage. See reveals M6.

Peacemakers — The maintenance crew’s nickname for their long rubber-handled prybars. Workshop slang, What Powers the Train.

The Pilgrim — The southern-circuit train; setting of Book Eight (The Pilgrim’s Blasphemy). The faith answer to order: it venerates the Passage wipe as the Mercy, its central sacrament. Arrivals are received (not processed) as souls newly delivered; governance is by devotion; the Conductor (Anselm) rules as much priest as administrator, by religious investiture. Lamplit and kneeling; its bureaucracy is liturgical (paperwork as sacrament). To ask why the Mercy happens is close to heresy — the unasked question is its deepest creed, which makes it the Arrangement’s ideal host (devotion does the immune system’s work for free). Purgatory — The grey, formless transitional space between death and arrival. Remembered only in fragments (motion, no landmarks, a sense of being sorted, voices that might have been instructions). Appears in B1’s opening and in recurring dream fragments.

The slow build — The grounders’ name for the phenomenon of the track network growing — junctions appearing, curves shifting, spurs extending, a few feet per generation. Central mystery of Book Three. Considered sacred by grounders. See reveals M4.

Station town — A small fortified settlement beside the tracks where trains stop briefly (a few hours) for resupply, maintenance, and passenger exchange. Symbiotic with the trains. Hessa’s Station (B3) is named for the Marrow family.

Ticket — A physical object (heavy printed card, dark red ink, Conductor’s seal) that determines your place and rights on the train. Enormously valuable; can be bought, earned, inherited, or — in the grey economy — forged, stolen, traded. Being aboard without one is a serious offence (forced labour or being put off at a platform town). Elliot earns his at the end of B1.

Train World — The setting as a whole: civilisation aboard colossal continent-spanning trains, with wild land between.

Written-in / unwritten (Vesper) — On The Vesper, your status in the count. A written-in person is enrolled — has served, holds the franchise, has a ration-share, a berth-right, and a voice. The unwritten are not in the count at all: outsiders, the un-enrolled, a stranded stranger — not persecuted so much as non-existent, owed nothing because they are on no board. Kit (Book Six) is unwritten; to gain standing she must be written in, which is earned by service and conferred by the assembly. Established Book Six.

The wilds — The land outside the trains: plains, forests, mountains, living weather. Beautiful and dangerous. Home to grounders and bandits. Glimpsed through windows; entered at station stops.


The Pilgrim — faith-train terms (Book Eight)

(Grouped for usability; cross-referenced from the A–Z above. All are the-wider-world / book-eight/overview canon.)

  • The Mercy — The Pilgrim’s name for the Passage memory-wipe: held as a holy gift, the central sacrament — the emptying that frees a soul of the weight it carried and delivers it clean. (On the page the faith’s framing; underneath, the imposed wipe, M3 — never decoded.)
  • The Delivered / a soul newly delivered — An arrival on The Pilgrim, received with ceremony as a soul newly born clean, rather than processed as a blank.
  • The Rite of Delivery — The welcome ceremony: the new soul named off the Roll, blessed, given a lamp and a vocation, the delivering-bell rung once over them (the first sound they hear).
  • The Roll of the Delivered — The Pilgrim’s sacred register; the train’s belief about itself written down (a name in is doctrinally true; a line drawn = the soul gone on to the Mercy). Kept by the clerks of the Office of the Delivered; recording is a rite, the drawing of a line the quiet sacrament. (Older volumes use an old hand — a looped, abbreviating notation no longer taught.)
  • Re-delivery — The rite of “correction” for a soul judged a wound in the floor (blasphemy reading): the emptying administered a second time, framed as the gift restored / rest. (Oblique: reabsorption-of-a-leak dressed as sacrament, M2/M3 — never stated. A soul rarely survives the second emptying.)
  • Translation / enshrinement — The rite for a soul judged a miracle: lifted out of ordinary life, set apart Fore-ward in the holy quiet near the sacred, “for protection and blessing.” (Oblique: removal dressed as honour — a death the train celebrates as a wonder.)
  • The Fore — The forward engine as sacred ground: the holiest place, nearest the warmth, approached only to the warm bulkhead of the sanctuary and never past it. Its unknowability is sacralised, never investigated (the faith-train’s seal over M5 — never decoded as harvest).
  • The Office of the Delivered — The carriage(s) where the Roll is kept, the lamps tended and stored, and arrivals welcomed; the workplace of clerks like Wick and of the Delivered set to gentle vocations (like Halia).
  • Confessor / Acclamant — The Pilgrim’s clergy beneath the priest-Conductor: Confessors hold the orthodoxy/judgement (the blasphemy reading; Thane); Acclamants hold veneration (the miracle reading; Avis). A soul’s anomaly is resolved by the Conductor’s ruling — received as a disclosure of the Mercy’s will, not a verdict.
  • The delivering-bell — The oldest, holiest object in the Office: a small bronze hand-bell rung once over each new soul at the Rite. A Passage object (M6): it resonates / sings unstruck near a retained-memory soul. (Never explain the resonance.)
